As we have seen, the amygdala keeps the most painful experiences and is activated quickly by only appreciating any similarity that has to do with the trauma experienced in the past.
Even when the person has become aware of its emotional reaction and perceives the situation in another way, we must continue to be alert to similar situations.
The amygdala never forgets; it is the regulator of biological and visceral fear and reasoning with is not possible. The amygdala can reactivate the emotional stress that seemed overcome if it comes into contact again with similar situations that triggered the biological response of stress.
Taking an emotional distance from the aversive stimulus is something that the person usually wants when under stressful contexts. However, although this distance usually gives a margin of space-time to manage the emotions involved in a more favorable way, it is important to keep in mind that an avoidant behavior, by itself, does not solve the problem.
The real purpose is to guide people to learn to manage their emotions when facing adverse situations and painful memories , by doing so, they stop being adverse and painful.
A profound perception change implies a neuronal restructuring that the person has to reaffirm with his behavior, in such a way that he must carry out actions and behaviors that are in coherence with this new way of perceiving.
There are people who, to develop their assertiveness and coherence, feel that they must first go through a process of isolation.
Our experience suggests that the need to carry out this process is independent of the seriousness of the conflict situation. There are people who can overcome quickly
very traumatic experiences and exposing themselves to the stress environment without any danger, while other people do not manage to transcend conflicting situations of less intensity.
This process of isolation is also known as “quarantine”. What is relevant about this process is not physical distance, but emotional distance.
However, on many occasions, people are unable to maintain their coherence in a hostile or stressful environment. In these cases -and to facilitate this emotional distance-, the person generally feels that he/she must take a physical distance from the said environment to, finally, consolidate a state of interior coherence that may be prolonged over time, regardless of the environment to which he/she is exposed.
Quarantine is not a systematic guideline applicable to any person. First, because well-being does not merely depend on performing a behavioral act and, secondly, because each person has his/her own transformation process.
Quarantine is a process that the person decides voluntarily and freely, and its characteristics are particular to each one. This process can be seen reflected in those cases of sick people who decide to make a radical change and leave the stressful rhythm of their lives and, precisely, this change is what allows their body to recover more easily.
